Our History

Mornings on Orange Street had its beginnings in January 2007 when Covenant United Methodist Church responded to a call by Fulton Elementary School principal Matthew Stem asking area churches to provide before-school care to students whose parents work but do not have the means to pay for childcare or the extended family to provide it at no cost. Covenant found a few volunteers to supervise the children and provided space for them to gather but was unable to devote time to plan programming or find enough volunteers to adequately staff the program.

In late spring 2007, Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, in an effort to understand and help meet the needs of its neighbors, contacted the elementary school. The principal, said that free before-school care for its working families was far and away the most pressing need the school had. Community Mennonite members then visited Covenant’s program and met with Covenant’s children and youth director. During the summer, members of the two churches discussed collaborating on a before-school program. Leaders from each congregation solicited volunteers, a part-time director was found, and the program began in October 2007 in the Gathering Place of Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster.

Mission Statement

MOOS is a self-supporting, non-profit, enrichment program jointly sponsored by Covenant United Methodist Church and Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster. MOOS provides a safe, fun and nurturing place for students from Robert Fulton Elementary School in the morning before school opens. MOOS contributes to the sense of self-respect, ability to build relationships and quality of life of children in the surrounding neighborhood.

Our Program is successful because of all of our committed and fun loving volunteers that dedicate numerous hours to the program each school year.  All of our volunteers are up to date with their PA clearances.
